March for Nature
8 June 2024
An estimated 20,000 people gathered in the Auckland city centre on Saturday 8 June to make a stand for nature. We filled the streets to protest against the Fast-track Approvals Bill, which would see inequitable power handed to just 3 ministers to do what they want with our natural environment in Aotearoa. Once reaching the end of Queen Street, we were told that many protestors still hadn’t made it out of Aotea Square where the march began - that’s a 1km stretch packed full of people.
The Bill also received 27,000 written submissions and 1,100 of these were given the opportunity to speak to theirs in front of the select committee. To put that into perspective, NZ Parliament usually receives about 40,000 submissions per year across dozens of bills, petitions, and inquiries.
Majority of the people of Aotearoa are clearly in opposition to the destruction this Bill would bring to our home. But the fight isn’t over yet - we will continue standing for nature until our voices are heard and our land, people, and democracy are protected. Toitū te taiao!
